A Day in the Life of an Investment Banking Analyst at UBS
A Day in the Life of an Investment Banking Analyst at UBSA Day in the Life of an Investment Banking Analyst at UBSIf youve ever wondered what an investment banking analyst can possibly doing at 305 a.m. in a taxi on her way to a managing directors apartment armed with a handful of pitchbooks, check out the below a Day in the Life of an analyst at UBS.715 a.m. Wake up and go for a run before getting ready for work you know you wont have time to go to the fancy gym you joined if you wait for a break later in the day.915 a.m. Leave for work. Youre technically supposed to be there by 9 but tend to roll into the office between 930 and 945 on days you dont have any urgent morning deliverables. Call mom and dad while walking to work. From your apartment its a 20-minute walk, which is the perfect amount of time to assure mom youre okay and not on the edge of a nervous breakdown when she grumbles about what time you left the office last night.930 a.m. Eat a bowl of cereal at your desk while responding to the emails you received while you were sleeping the night before. You notice that you received an important email that your inbox filters accidentally moved to a folder that doesnt appear on your Blackberry. Luckily, you stayed late last night to complete the LBO analysis you were working on and youre able to respond to the email right away.1000 a.m. Meet with your verstndigung im strafverfahren team in your MDs office to talk about the book youre working on for tomorrows meeting. Your MD is leaving for the airport at 400 a.m. to speak to the CFO of a company youre advising on a buy-side MA transaction. You receive a heavy mark-up, which you know will take you all day to complete. Luckily, one of the two pitches you were also working on for tomorrow was rescheduled for next week.1100 a.m. Email your friend who works at the bank across the street to cancel your lunch plans. The two of you have literally been trying to get together for the past four months but despite th e fact that you work so close your schedules never seem to coincide.1105 a.m. Begin working on the mark-up. Re-run the DCF youve been showing for the past three weeks using completely new assumptions, which changes just about every page in the presentation. Re-paste every page in the book. Incorporate text comments from everyone on the team and add a few pages to the presentation showing the targets performance relative to its peers over the course of the past 12 months.100 p.m. Run downstairs to the cafeteria with some of the other analysts in your group.105 p.m. Run to the sandwich shop across the street because youre getting tired of the cafeterias weekly rotations. Get your sandwich to go so you can eat at your desk while you continue working on the changes you received this morning.200 p.m. Your associate on tomorrows pitch (the refinancing one that didnt get cancelled) shoots you an email asking you to set up a dial-in for your team to discuss a new analysis to be included in the pitch materials. After trying to coordinate everyones calendars you finally set up the call for 700 p.m. as thats the only time everyone is available to talk. Your associate asks you to begin the analysis in the meantime so we have something to discuss on the call, despite the fact that he doesnt fully understand what the analysis is, and neither do you.300 p.m. After attempting the pitch analysis you resume work on the MA meeting materials. After all, a live deal takes priority, and at least you know what youre doing on that one. Complete the analysis and send to your associate and VP for review.415 p.m. Despite the fact that your MD was okay with keeping the stock prices in the MA book updated as of last Friday, your associate now wants everything updated as of todays market close since you havent printed the book yet anyway. Re-re-paste everything in the book.500 p.m. Circulate the book for what you hope will be the last time so you can get the final version to print.515 p.m. Receive an email from your MD saying hes on his way to a dinner but will take a look at the book when he gets home. Since you finally have a brief window until your 700 p.m. call, you update your comps for the companies that released earnings yesterday and browse The New York Times and Wall Street Journal online to see whats going on in the world.600 p.m. Order dinner via Seamless Web. You would like to order with the other analysts in your group so you can have a family dinner in the conference room, but you have your 700 p.m. call so you know you will have to miss it tonight.655 p.m. Your VP emails you asking if you can push the call back to 800 p.m. as he just realized he has another call to be on at 700 p.m. You know its going to be a late one since you wont be able to start the refinancing analysis until after the call ends.800 p.m. Get on the phone and discuss the pitch materials with your team. You finally catch a break and your MD says the Leveraged Finance team will be tak ing care of the majority of the analysis. All you have to do is put together an industry overview section (youve done plenty of them in the past), which you can work on until you receive comments from the MD on the MA deal.1100 p.m. Your MD has finally returned from his dinner and just now sends you his comments for the MA meeting via email. Hes concerned as to why all the numbers in the book have changed since the last time he looked, and you explain that youve updated the stock prices for todays close. He asks you to change them back to last Fridays prices since the client is comfortable with those numbers and he doesnt want the client to question anything. Re-re-re-paste everything in the book.1200 a.m. Circulate the book for the last time to get your MDs final sign-off. While youre waiting for his okay, you shoot the industry section for the refinancing pitch to the Lev Fin analyst for inclusion in her latest version of those materials.130 a.m. Finally receive confirmation that you can send the MA books to print. After doing so you head to the conference room to watch some TV while you wait for the books. There are still quite a few people on your floor and its better to hang out in there since you can actually close your eyes for a bit if you want to.300 a.m. Books are finally printed. After you flip through them to make sure there are no print errors or missing pages you shoot your MD an email saying youre on your way to deliver the books to his apartment, as he is leaving for the airport in an hour and you dont want him to worry about the books not making it. 305 a.m. Hop in a cab outside your building and ask the driver to take you to your MDs apartment on the other side of town.330 a.m. Return to your apartment building. Say goodnight to your doorman who gently reminds you, once again, that it is actually good morning.

Nanotechnology Fuels Safe Lithium Ion Batteries
Nanotechnology Fuels Safe Lithium Ion Batteries Nanotechnology Fuels Safe Lithium Ion Batteries Nanotechnology Fuels Safe Lithium Ion BatteriesAs a Ph.D. student in materials science at Stanford University, Candace Chans failure in making metal oxide materials in nano fasson led her down a path she may never have taken otherwise. This path put her at the forefront of finding an alternative method for making popular, but volatile, lithium-ion batteries that have caused safety concerns. Prof. Candace Chan, Arizona State University works on creating a new generation of batteries. Image ASUHer general interest as she embarked on her doctorate was in looking for a common and scalable method of making nanomaterials. At the time, there werent any good ways to make all sorts of nanomaterials using one single technique, says Chan, an associate professor in Arizona State Universitys Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering. You had to find the right synthesis method for each individu al material. It was a tedious process. After many attempts, she ended up with just one success, a very beautiful metal oxide nanowire material, but she had no idea what it could be used for. After learning that it could be a useful battery material, she focused her Ph.D. candidacy on using nanomaterials to improve the properties of lithium ion batteries. For you Learn how nanotechnology became engineerings new frontier.Today, she and the researchers in her ASU group in Materials Science and Engineering are laying foundations for the next generation of batteries. Chan received a National Science Foundation Career Award in 2016 to support research of a ceramic replacement to flammable zerflossen electrolytes used in batteries. This award is issued yearly and includes a federal grant for five years to support junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through research, education, and the integration of education and research within their organizations. Were trying to replac e the liquid electrolyte in lithium batteries with a solid. We need to find a solid that is going to allow a battery to work just as well as a liquid does. Prof. Candace Chan, Arizona State UniversityLithium ion batteries are highly desirable for portable electronics, power tools and equipment, and even electric vehicles because of their effective combination of high energy and power in a tiny space. But as demand for increasingly smaller and lighter yet more energy dense batteries has grown, so has the risk of short circuiting, causing the flammable liquid electrolyte inside to heat up, catch fire, and explode. There has been enough concern that many airlines have banned the batteries from checked luggage. What were doing is trying to replace this liquid with a solid. In doing so, we need to find a solid that is going to allow a battery to work just as well as a liquid does, Chan says. The challenge is that many solid electrolytes can be brittle, inflexible, and fragile. To overcome those drawbacks, the researchers are working with composites made of lithium-conducting ceramic nanomaterials mixed with various polymers. The team recently published an article in ACSs Applied Energy Materials, written by lead author J. Mark Weller, a Ph.D. candidate, on a new molten salt synthesis method the researchers developed for making a solid state ceramic material, lithium lanthanum zirconate (LLZO). In the materials science world, LLZO is considered a hot material right now and a lot of groups are working on it, Chan said. Researchers, though, face some challenges in making it into a real product. When made by the new method, the material offers improved safety over liquid electrolytes and maintains high ionic conductivity that allows the lithium ions to move through the solid almost as fast as through the liquid. We found that because the range of the material was in the nanometer range, it could allow the lithium to go in much faster, Chan says. The end result is a thin fl exible film that can be easily implemented into batteries and its very scalable. With more engineering work we are hoping to get it even faster, Chan says. Weve been able to make 50 grams at a time, which is a lot of material. We are limited only by the size of our glassware and heating apparatuses.Others in the field already know how to make the film, but the problem with most of them is that the films are too thick, Chan says. Weve established this new synthesis method and done some preliminary testing of connectivity, though we havent made a real battery yet, she says.Chan does believe there is enough potential to take the next step soon.Hopefully we are going to be working with some companies in the battery-making business to see if they are interested in licensing this method for their devices, she says. I can imagine this could be something that would be in a real battery within a few years, for sure within fewer than five years.Nancy Giges is an independent writer.Read moraFly ing to Space on Butterfly WingsClams Give Energy to BiofuelsSolar Power for Everyone For Further Discussion

Ask for a Raise, Follow This Advice
Ask for a Raise, Follow This AdviceAsk for a Raise, Follow This AdviceAsk, the old saying goes, and ye shall receive. Sounds simple enough, but when it comes to salary negotiation with your boss, it can get tricky. How should accounting and finance professionals ask for a raise? Before acting, you need to have three things knowledge, good timing and salary negotiation know-how. Heres a proven formula for success when you are ready to ask for a raise.1. Know your market valueDo you know how much youre worth? If not, you need to find out. Accounting and finance professionals are no strangers to analyzing data. Apply the same rigor to your salary negotiation tactics. If you go in blind when you ask for a raise, you risk asking for too much or too little - neither of which is ideal. Its important to know what professionals with similar skills as you earn in your local area, because compensation levels can vary drastically across the country. The Robert Half Salary Guide for Accounting Fin ance provides a detailed breakdown of starting salaries based on position, and you can see how skill set, experience level and other factors can affect compensation. You can also customize compensation data even further for mora than 190 U.S. cities. You can adjust salaries for jobs in your city with the Salary Calculator, and download your own copy of the Salary Guide. 2. Realize that timing is everythingDont surprise your boss by asking for a raise out of the blue. Schedule a meeting and make it clear you have salary negotiation on your mind. That will give your supervisor a chance to prepare and discuss the matter with those higher up, if necessary. It also gives you mora time to put together a list of points that illustrates why you deserve to earn more. Have you logged significant accomplishments recently? Have your job duties changed? Do you anticipate contributing to the firm in new ways in the comin g months? Remember, you need to justify your request if you hope to have it approved. Also realize that there are good times to ask for a raise, and there are bad times. Take a close look at whats going on within your firm to determine if now is an appropriate time to start a salary negotiation or if you should wait.Bad times to ask for a raise include the followingTheres an impending merger or buyoutAnnual reporting deadlines are fast approachingbrde quarters revenue was down substantially, or an important client just leftYour boss is going on vacation soonEarly Monday morning or late Friday afternoonHere are some better times to ask for a higher salaryNear the end of your performance review - if it was largely positiveOn your work anniversaryAfter youve successfully completed a major project or brought in new businessWhen youre asked to supervise more peopleWhen youre asked to take on responsibilities not in your original job descriptionWhat if your supervisor cant meet your deman ds at this time or doesnt think youve quite proven yourself? Theres no need to give up. Ask when you should revisit the salary negotiation. And in the interim, brainstorm ways to up your game, add value to the company and show your indispensability.3. Know when to stopThroughout the salary discussion, remain gracious and professional. If a raise isnt in the cards, consider requesting other employee perks, benefits or incentives, such as more vacation or a flexible work arrangement. Show the employer you want to reach an agreement that works for both of you.Be careful about threatening to quit if you dont receive a raise. Issuing an ultimatum can easily backfire if your boss takes you up on the offer. Only do so if you are prepared for the consequences.Knowing how to ask for more can be tricky. By doing your research, making sure you ask for a raise at the right time, and knowing when and whether to push back, youll have a much better shot of getting the compensation you desire and d eserve. For a lighter look at what not do in salary negotiations, enjoy the video below.

The new app allows managers to send customized text homilies to any sized groups ranging from single individuals to small groups or even to an entire staff. Since most people are texting more than they talk, employee communication needs to adapt in order to be as effective as possible, says Chad Halvorson, CEO of thisCLICKS. With 174 million Americans texting daily, and 97% of those texts being opened within 15 minutes of being received, its hard to argue that human communication has shifted. Although text communication is booming, not all mobile communications are equally popular according to Mogreet, a leading text message marketing firm, 88% o f emails are never even opened. Halvorson continues, If you have a crucial time-sensitive message for your employees, texting is absolutely the most reliable option. In addition to TeamTxt, When I Work also includes its standard 2-way messaging service which sends automated text messages to employees for purposes such as schedule updates, upcoming shifts, and work requests. Trial accounts of When I Work start with 25 free TeamTxt credits with future credits available beginning at 3 cents per message.Since When I Works launch two years ago, weve seen that the text messages are incredibly valuable to our customers. 9 types of people who never succeed at work
9 types of people who never succeed at work9 types of people who never succeed at workExperience and knowledge are rapidly losing their relevance to success in the workplace. Harvard economist David Deming studied workplace tasks from 1980 to the present day and found that those that emphasize social skills grew by a whopping 24%, while tasks requiring technical know-how and intelligence experienced little growth. Deming also found that salaries increased the most for jobs that place extra emphasis on social skills. With the increasing emphasis on social skills, those who lack them stand out like a zebra in a field of horses. We all know the types the person who wont stop talking when youre trying to meet a deadline, the one who blatantly takes credit for your ideas, or the one who callously leaves you to pull an all-nighter to fix their mistake. The list goes on.There are a lot of otherwise intelligent people out there who cant stop shooting themselves in the foot. Sadly, their lack of self-awareness and social skills are massive detriments to their careers.Social skills and self-awareness are matters of emotional intelligence (EQ), and TalentSmarts research with over a mio people has shown that emotional intelligence is responsible for 58% of job performance. Those who lack emotional intelligence are at a significant disadvantage.Failure isnt fatal, but failure to change might be John WoodenThere are certain types of people whose lack of emotional intelligence harms their careers mora than others. By studying them, you can avoid becoming one of them, and, if your reading experience is anything like my writing experience, youll see bits of yourself in some of these profiles. Usethatknowledge to build your self-awareness, make adjustments, and grow as a person. The cowardFear is an extremely powerful motivator. This is why presidential candidates tell people that their opponent will destroy the economy and advertisements warn that smoking kills. In the workplace , people overcome by fear resort to irrational and damaging behavior. Cowardly colleagues are quick to blame others and to cover up important mistakes, and they fail to stand up for what is right. The DementorIn J. K. Rowlings Harry Potter series, Dementors are evil creatures that suck peoples souls out of their bodies, leaving them merely as shells of humans. Whenever a Dementor enters the room, it goes dark and cold and people begin to recall their worst memories. Rowling said that she developed the concept for Dementors based on highly negative people- the kind of people who have the ability to walk into a room and instantly suck the life out of it. Dementors suck the life out of the room by imposing their negativity and pessimism upon everyone they encounter. Their viewpoints are always glass half empty, and they can inject fear and concern into even the most benign situations. The arrogantArrogant people are a waste of your time because they see everything you do as a personal ch allenge. Arrogance is false confidence, and it always masks major insecurities. A University of Akron study found that arrogance is correlated with a slew of problems in the workplace. Arrogant people tend to be lower performers and more disagreeable and to have more cognitive problems than the average person. The group-thinkerGroup-thinkers choose the path of least resistance and are famous for propagating the this is how weve always done it mentality. If you find yourself getting brainwashed with what everyone else believes, be careful the status quo never leads to greatness. The short-changedThe short-changed are quick to blame their lack of accomplishment on a lack of opportunity. While a lucky break may put a little wind in a successful persons sails, they got where they are through hard work. What the short-changed dont realize is that their attitude is whats short-changing them, not their circumstances. The temperamentalSome people have absolutely no control over their emotions. They will lash out at you and project their feelings onto you, all the while thinking that youre the one causing their malaise. Temperamental people perform poorly because their emotions cloud their judgment and their lack of self-control destroys their relationships. Be wary of temperamental people when push comes to shove they will use you as their emotional toilet. The victimVictims are tough to identify because you initially empathize with their problems. But, as time passes, you begin to realize that their time of need isall the time. Victims actively push away any personal responsibility by making every speed bump they encounter into an uncrossable mountain. They dont see tough times as opportunities to learn and grow from instead, they see them as an out.The gullibleYou cant help but feel sorry for the gullible type. Theyre the ones who find themselves babysitting the bosss kids the morning after pulling a late night of work . . . on a Sunday For whatever reason, gullible peo ple (often newbies) go with the flow until the gentle river becomes a tumultuous ocean. Its okay to negotiate your salary, its okay to say no, and its okay to question the way things are done. Youll earn a lot more respect if you stand up for yourself when the time is right. The apologizerFor every person out there who owes an apology, theres another who apologizes too often. People who lack confidence are always apologizing for their ideas and actions. They fear failure and believe that apologizing will act as a safety net. Instead, unnecessary apologies cheapen their ideas and make them less likely to stick. Its important that your tone of voice and body language reflect the importance of your ideas. Stating an idea or opinion as a question is just as bad as apologizing. If you really believe something is worth sharing, then own it and share it with confidence.Bringing It All TogetherNone of these behaviors are a career death sentence because they can be eradicated through improved emotional intelligence. All it takes is a little self-awareness and a strong desire to change.Travis Bradberryis the co-author ofEmotional Intelligence 2.0,and the cofounder ofTalentSmart. This article first appeared on LinkedIn.

The 6 Mindset Principles of Successful People
The 6 Mindset Principles of Successful People The 6 Mindset Principles of Successful People speciesicle by Julian HayesThe path to accomplishing your biggest dreams and goals has never been clearer, thanks to the wealth of information on personal and professional success now available. However, just because the price of admission to the game has decreased, that doesnt mean the journey will be a cakewalk. That said, its also not quantum physics. In reality, all that separates getting what you want and falling short is a small gap, and it all comes down to your mindset. If youre looking to become the best version of yourself, youll need to implement certain mindset principles - the same ones the most successful people adopt. Start with these six1. Keep Your Word to YourselfWhen you do what you say youre going to do, you build self-respect and a positive identity. Successful people understand that every time you break the promises you make to yourself, you feed your identity as an impos tor and weaken your self-confidence as a person of action. For example, if you commit to exercising 30 minutes each day, then do it. Regardless of the outcome, your character is being positively molded, and that will generate momentum along your journey.2. Use Envy to Your AdvantageWanting something you dont currently have is a behavior rooted in your DNA, but just because its a normal feeling doesnt mean you cant control it or leverage it to your benefit.Successful people understand that beneath the layers of envy lies a core need they desire.
